History of Training Centre
Geographical Location and History: The Police Training Centre is located just three kilometers east along the Natiapara – Fatehpur road connected to the Dhaka -Tangail highway in Mohera Union of Mirzapur Upazila under Tangail district. It was established immediately before 1890. The immaculate natural beauty of Mohera Zamindar Bari is breathtaking. This brilliant architecture has been standing there as a symbol of time by spreading its natural beauty. It is situated in a secluded countryside surrounded by lush green, the chirping of birds where the nature is quiet and noise-free. The entire area is full of flora and fauna collected from home and abroad. This beautiful Zamindar Bari has survived hundreds of adversities over the centuries.
MoheraZamindar Bari is a century-old structure. In 1890, the then four brothers named as BudaiShaha (BiduShaha), BuddhuShaha, HarendraShaha and KalicharanShaha established this Zamindary Estate. They established the Zamindary with the title of Shaha and started constructing building in four parts or shares. However, their children and the next generation all took the title of ‘RoyChowdhury’.
On 14th May in 1971, during the Liberation War of Bangladesh, the Pakistan army attacked the MoheraZamindar Bari and brutally shot dead five villagers, including the bride wife Jogmaya Roy Chowdhury behind the temple of Chowdhury Lodge. Among the victims were a local primary school teacher PanditBimal Kumar Sarkar and villagers Manind Kumar Chakrabarty, Atul Chandra Saha and NoyaiBanik.
Mohera Zamindar Bari is mainly surrounded by four majestic buildings, namely Maharaj Lodge, Ananda Lodge, Chowdhury Lodge and Kalicharan Lodge. Besides, there are various scenic and traditional structures including NayebBhabon, KachariBhabon, GomostaBhabon etc. The century-old establishment is currently used as Police Training Centre and is open to visitors at the subject to some security restrictions. Although almost every Zamindar Bari in Bangladesh are on the verge of destruction, the MoheraZamindar Bari is largely intact in its own existence.
Establishment of Police Training School
With the approval of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh MujiburRahman the then Home Minister Abdul Mannan handed over the abandoned property of MoheraZamindar Bari to Bangladesh Police for setting up Mohera Police Training School in 1972. Later the school upgraded to Police Training Centre in 1990.
Mohera Zamindar Bari is located in Mohera of Tangail district of Bangladesh. In current days this place is known as Mohera Police Training Centre but open for public visiting with an entry fee. People believe that Moherazamindari started somewhere around in 1890. First zamidar was KalicharanShaha. Beside their land lordship they conducted trading related to Jute and Salt. They were the owner of huge land properties from different part of Bangladesh. During country division (1947) and war (1971) most of them moved into India. Only a few are still living in Tangail. Their attractive edifices are now became a tourist spot. People said they have built those buildings before establishing their Jomidari as they were already rich enough.
Maharaj Lodge is a unique example of impeccable architectural style. Maharaj Lodge is a two-storey building to the west of the vast zamindar house. It has a total of 10 spacious rooms. The Maharaja Lodge is a blend of Eastern architecture with Western architecture. There is a spacious open courtyard in front of the Maharaj Lodge. A flower garden has been built over a large part of this open space. At the back of the Maharaj Lodge is a vast desert. There is a spacious tennis court. There is a children’s park across the western part of the tennis court. The present tennis court was the Nat Mandir of the zamindars. On the north side of it was the Durga temple. The procession to Kolkata used to last for about 10 days in a year and a huge fair was held on the shores of BishakhaSagar during the puja. There was a tall building on the south side between Maharaj and Ananda Lodge. Sanai, dhol, tikari etc. are played there during puja. The zamindar’s house was opened for the entry of local Hindus and Muslims during the puja to see the procession. To the north of Maharaj Lodge and Ananda Lodge is the location of the vast Pasra Pond after the huge field. The Pasra Pond, which holds the Maharaj Lodge and the nearby Ananda Lodge, has been in existence for over a century. The location of AranyaAsan is in the northern desert on the banks of the vast Pasra pond. In the middle of the huge forest Ashan, “Anamaya” has been built with skillful artistry.
The residence on the other side of the zamindar’s house is called Ananda Lodge. Ananda Lodge is a two-storied house built with a unique blend of unique architectural styles of West and East. It has a total of 12 rooms. The spacious rooms were built with absolute compassion for a better life. AnandaBhavan’sJhul verandah is one of the eye-catching architectural styles. The ground floor of the building is currently being used as PTC’s administrative building. The area adjacent to the Ananda Lodge is well preserved. This Ananda Lodge is one of the attractions of the creators of the showbiz world, the artisans.
Chowdhury Lodge is located on the east side of the zamindar house. Chowdhury Lodge is also a two storey building. The building has a total of six spacious rooms. Three rooms are on the upper floor and three rooms on the lower floor. AadharChowdhury Lodge is unique in its vibrant construction style. The floral carvings on the upper floors still sway the viewer’s heart. The uniqueness of the intellectual thinking of the builders a hundred years ago still stands as a matter of great wonder. The structure of the south verandah of Chowdhury Lodge is also unique. In front of Chowdhury Lodge, there is a beautiful flower garden across the vast desert. In the garden, there are varieties of roses, Rangana Belly, Jaba, Gandharaja, Madhabi, Togar, Kamini etc. There is an amusement park in the courtyard. The park’s flowers and trees have enlivened the park. The park has portraits of tigers, deers, giraffes, fishes, deers, kites, ostriches etc.
Sudhindra Roy Chowdhury is the main personality of ChowdhuryBhaban. He was the President of the Union Council during the Pakistan period. He was very kind. His generous hands were innumerable.
There is a guest house at the back of Chowdhury Lodge. There are two VIP rooms on either side of this picturesque building built by the zamindars. The location of the dining room is in the middle. The unique feature of the teak wood design in the huge doors in the middle of the huge structure built in the style of ancient Nawabi architecture. Today, the guest house has become a unique and eye-catching installation built on a combination of ancient architecture and modern interior art.
Passing a few steps of the Sentry Post No. 1 of PTC and a huge gateway is on the left. This gate is a symbol of the nobility and beauty of the Chaturthakul on behalf of the zamindar. Kalicharan Lodge has been built on the fourth side. The artistic and sophisticated taste of the zamindars has been expressed in the glory of the unique architectural style. The vast Kalicharan Lodge is built in a completely different style from the other three buildings. In front of the Kalicharan Lodge was the pujomandapa, where the queen, zamindar Nandani and Nandans used to offer pujo. The huge TulsiDham just behind the Pujo house has taken the artistry of the building to a unique height. The beauty and sophisticated taste of KalicharanBabu’s mind is reflected in the construction style of the entire building. In front of the Kalicharan Lodge there is a huge open space across the vast desert called SabujMekhla. There is ShaheedMinar.
Beside the attractive architectural buildings, the Zamindar premise has other buildings named as KachariBhobon,NayebBhobon Rani Bhobon etc. There are also several large ponds around the premise. Those are named as BishakaShagor, PoshraShagor, etc.
